Two-minute warning!

Posted by R1665 Apr. 4, 2009 @ 3:01 AM EDT

Once again, I find myself at a milestone.

In the past month, I have added another sixty seconds to VG Exiles Ep. 2 and the production now stands at two minutes. All things considered, it's not as far along as it should be by this point. Granted, I am fully producing this fight as I go with all necessary effects, but during NaNoWriMo last November, I put five seconds on my flash almost every night. I need to find some excuse to accelerate my productive drive again.

I've spent the last few nights doing more work than usual on Episode 2, so I guess I now have a good start for SCRIPT FRENZY!

SCRIPT FRENZY is an online event during the month of April in which participants are challenged to write a 100-page script in 30 days. It is almost identical to NaNoWriMo's November goal of a 50,000-word novel written in one month.

Two years ago, I unofficially used NaNoWriMo as kind of an artificial deadline and motivator for writing a script for a horror film (long story, don't ask). I unofficially used NaNo last year for getting the bulk of VG Exiles Ep.1 finished. Unfortunately, NaNo won't be around again until November. Fortunately, I now have Script Frenzy to supply the artificial urgency that I need in order to work at maximum efficiency.

It may seem strange to you that I work best with an artificial motivator, especially considering that I never formally participate in the actual event.

...but it works.

By this time next month, I'm hoping to have the fight portion finished at four minutes and some change. I know that I originally mentioned a five-minute fight, but I have to take the cumulative effect on that extra minute into account when estimating my final file size. It still won't be under 10 MB, but it shouldn't be so high that it makes Tom Fulp recoil in disgust.

I'll make up for it by cramming three minutes' worth of action into the last two minutes.

-----

No screenshot this time, so no Front Page post. That was the deal.

I'm sure the usual crew won't miss these words, though!

what are you talking about!?:/

Well, when you make something, you are supposed to make your planning or script first.

Like me, I've done my script. how everything should be. from menu design to what sound effects and music should be used.

All I just need to do is start on it.

If you start production without script, you'll lose motivation, seriously. Happens all the time. Also, if you work without script, the idea you had in mind, you might have changed, and you'll noticed this isn't what you were supposed to do.

I think you may have misunderstood.

I'm not writing a script. I am using an event that is normally used for script writing to produce artificial urgency for my flashing.

I already work on flash on a regular basis, but I never have anybody "cracking the whip".

SCRIPT FRENZY, like NaNoWriMo, is just an artificial deadline. It motivates me to put more time in each night.

I've known the path that Ep.2 would follow since before I set down the first frame.

Dude, you are working to fast. I hope this is not affecting the quality of your animation. Try to slow down from time to time. That's what I do. Especially when I am out of ideas, I sit down and think. I just cant believe that you are on two-minutes already. It looks like I need to work faster if I am ever to release my animation before you.

Apr. 5, 2009 | 2:15 PM R1665 responds:

It's not that I'm working faster, it's that I'm putting more time in each night. I start diverting time away from other things and direct it towards flashing.

Basically, laundry goes unwashed and my apartment descends into chaos.

The time span between Episodes Zero and One was six months. It's now been four months since I released Episode One. That said, I need to get this thing done.

I like how you update us on your flash. I'm not rushing you. I know that good work takes time but it's nice to know that you're working on it. So many times I've gotten into a flash series and the author just stops cold turkey on it and never update about what happened. I reallly look forward to the next vg exiles and good luck on it.

well done, still waiting. With the current look I can only wonder what other shit gambit is going to tear up.

Knowing how you are evil could easily triumph as well, so I am at a miss of who will win the fight.

Well, I hope things go well. I can't wait for this one. I loved ep 0 and ep 1. Your series is awesome, and I can't wait to see what comes out of the hat next. Your flash gave me some ideas to put into my flash and gave me a bit of motivation (along with some music I was listening too). Well, keep up the good work.

i dont find the artificial motivator thing werid in fact im on the same strategy boat as you.im wiriting stories in a series but my goal is usually finish before the end of the year and relax the last protion of it.
